Coasting Home
There are no streetlights out tonight
No signs to show if I am lost
In the miracle of pounding silence, settling fog on forest giants
Close my eyes, breathe deep the vines and moss.
I pay no heed to the imminent danger; I will greet the shadow stranger
Birdsong starts to echo through the valley’s rising dome
Thought I’d started up this mountain on my own—I am coasting home…
Pulled myself out of the twisted wreck
Not knowing I’d left part of me inside
In the sky felt the wind was breaking, on the ground the earth was quaking
On the water, terrors of the tides
If I pay no heed to the imminent danger; if I greet the shadow stranger
I’ve hit the walls of a cage when I’ve flown
Come to wonder if I’ll always crash and burn when I’m coasting home…
I still taste the bittersweet goodbyes
And threats of love are far and few between
At times I feel the vacuum left around my bed and in my chest
Better left unfilled by desperate dreams.
But I pay no heed to the imminent danger; I will greet the shadow stranger
I’m losing my connection but she’s answering the phone
I still catch my breath and say hello—I am coasting home.
There are no streetlights here tonight
No signs to show if I am lost
In the miracle of pounding silence, see life grow beyond it’s violence
Close my eyes breathe deep beyond the loss…
I pay no heed to the imminent danger; I will greet the shadow stranger
When I stand with resolve, I’m not standing alone
I am sailing forward—I am coasting home.
