Envelope

Skyrocket Charlie at the mailbox
Postal truck dust slowly in the air
With a thin white envelope from Tucson
A hint of perspiration in his hair

On the straight shot asphalt high school drop-outs
With stuck-out limbs from fast cars down the road
Trees their dark impressionist painting
And one-time wary flat dry little toads.

Charlie’s hopes like sun on glass shard sidewalks
No one way ticket out of this here town
In a thin white envelope from Tucson
Now wheelbarrow Charlie, sad, head down

Rain clouds in his broken brow and thunder
Rainbow frown like chances in a drain
But visits and good comfort from some good friends
Skyrocket Charlie’s engine cool again

Bits of paper on the grass blades
Bits of paper on the breeze
From a thin white envelope from Tucson
His nowhere future silent as the trees…
