Freedom Song
She says “sometimes I get tired of this climb
I wonder what sort of foundation I’ve built all this time
the freedom I have found on these wings
I feel like a kite in a windstorm torn loose from its strings.”
She says “I need something to take me from these four walls
something akin to amnesia for the times when I fall.
But to forget these ties I am bound to creep
too close to the edge of myself and I live in my sleep.”
She stares at the wall or the TV set
glaring bright to the back of her mind
but it only casts shadows of all her regrets
on the wall there are dark shapes behind
What can I say to you? I’m sending signals from the moon
and each time I try to say something it falls short of this room.
But we revolve around each other—each chained to the other’s hands
and we carry this knowledge like fire—that you know who I am.
She says “sometimes I get tired of this climb.”
But there are so many people who love who you’ve been all this time.
Maybe freedom is only when you feel the weight of your choice
and you can keep singing out in the windstorm don’t silence your voice…
Don’t silence your voice…
I need your voice…
