Pieces of the Sky

We were sitting on the wall above the street. (we) Didn’t feel the wind from passing cars
just poised in our own time.
Violent stars threatened to separate the sky into two pieces, yours and mine.
We didn’t want to fade into the dark. We didn’t know if we would come to see
the river’s not that wide.
And we fell silent the band was loud and beating with our hearts
I felt your hands reaching inside.

I drove away with the summer in my pockets
leaking out as I went northward like a trail to lead me home.
We were dancing in slow motion over miles and through the airwaves
I felt your passion smiling on the phone.

Got a ticket for a 7:50 flight. I moved like wildfire through the crowds
just thinking of your name.
You came home early, watched the moon illuminate the trees
and left to meet me at my plane.
We were waltzing in the air around the room. We were walking on the prairie
sunrise shining in our eyes.
I am singing about the paths our memories had made
the entwining of our lives.

We were driving toward the summer, interlocking with our hands and conversations
—love was too much to explain.
I held a book that you gave me piecing fragments of the sky into one coherent picture
I was holding you Elaine.
