Rootless
The crescent moon is riding my left shoulder
like a worry; like a cheshire cat grin
and I wonder if the joke is on me,
close the door and floor the gas again.
Trees are skeletons along this darkened highway
green forest background fades away
In the clouds of smoke I see the faces of home
and the places where I never can stay
I’m moving through this crazed disaster
not quite like it was on TV
I feel like so many people feeling so connected
flipping through the same channels I see…
Chorus:
Now I’m far away and moving farther
but each mile feels like I’ve just begun.
Round the corner and the lights of this long highway
go out one by one…
Sometimes I catch your face in the rearview mirror
but I look again and it’s really mine.
I was just wearing one of your expressions
close my eyes…and move (drive) out of time.
Tired of chain store hospitality
Feed me something from the satelite dish.
What I wouldn’t give for a home-cooked life
to look up at a million stars….and make one wish.
Chorus.
The crescent moon is riding my left shoulder
fades the stars and lights up this town.
But I hope I still can find my way
moving slowly…I remember to look around.
